Are you not getting any call backs from your applications and wondering why? Is your CV in need of a makeover? Here are some simple tips and tricks to make sure it’s the best it can be so employers are keen to give you a call.

1. Spelling Mistakes

Always ensure you use Word to perform a spell check for your CV and covering letter. Looking for something more in depth? Download Grammarly – We use it all the time in the office, it’s great! (& free)

2. File Name

Make your CV file name something suitable – Don’t forget, employers and recruiters can see this!

3. Changes

Every job requires something different, so every application should be altered to this. Changes should only be slight, such as changing the profile section at the top to state what you’re looking for, but this can be vital for getting to interview stage.

4. Contact

This should be a given but please, please, please include your contact details at the top of your CV – You wouldn’t believe how many people forget this so we’re unable to contact them!

If you change your telephone number, remember to change it on your CV, especially if your CV is uploaded to different job boards. You may miss out on the perfect job offer!

5. Structure

Get your CV structured so it’s easily readable. We suggest putting your name and contact details at the top. Then under ‘Work Experience’, include company name(s) and job title(s) along with bullet points briefly explaining what you did in this role. You can then add other sections such as ‘Education’, ‘Voluntary Work’ or anything else that would be relevant to your application.

6. Stay Up To Date

Always keep your CV up to date! Don’t cause confusion when your last work experience ended in 2015 and there’s no explanation. Even if you’ve been unemployed or a stay at home mum, state this on your CV so employers/recruiters know what you’re up to.

7. Hobbies

Add a small section on hobbies because who knows, you could love skiing and so could your next employer, so they may ask you about it in the interview!

8. Keep It Simple

Two pages or less, exclude any details which aren’t 100% necessary, e.g. what primary school you went to and your marital status.
